Berry Flax Smoothie

This smoothie is built for fiber and omega-3s rather than pure protein volume, which makes it a good lighter option on mornings after a big dinner. Frozen berries bring fiber and color, Greek yogurt adds protein and calcium, and ground flaxseed contributes ALA—a plant omega-3—plus more fiber.

At 280 calories it works as a breakfast on its own, or as an afternoon snack that will not spoil your appetite for dinner. The handful of spinach is invisible in the finished drink, so it is an easy way to add a vegetable before 10 a.m.

Ingredients

  • frozen mixed berries1 cup (140 g)
  • plain nonfat Greek yogurt3/4 cup (170 g)
  • ground flaxseed1 tbsp (7 g)
  • baby spinach1 cup (30 g)
  • water or unsweetened almond milk1/2 cup (120 ml)

  2. 2

Add the Greek yogurt, frozen berries, ground flaxseed, spinach, and ice.

  3. 3

Blend on high for 45 to 60 seconds, until smooth and no spinach flecks remain.

  4. 4

Pour into a glass and drink while cold.

Tips

  • ✓Grind flaxseed fresh if you can—pre-ground flax loses some of its omega-3 ALA over time.
  • ✓If the smoothie is too thick, add water a tablespoon at a time rather than more juice.
  • ✓Frozen berries are picked at peak ripeness, so they are as nutritious as fresh and far more convenient.
